Robert Wright - Photographer

First thing I’d like to say is welcome to my website, thank you so very much for stopping by and I hope you enjoy what you see.  To start out with, as you can tell, my name is Robert Wright and yes, I’m a Photographer.  I’m also a Graphic Artist, Musician, Gamer and quite a few other interesting titles I could post but…. Nah… That’s for another site all together dealing with everything except for what I’m focusing on here.

I’ve been in Photography going on ten years now.  I have been involved with the Fort Worth Camera Club and even traveled to Utah with them to photograph the Arches National Park.  This all started of course by being around a great Photographer and my best friend, Tommy of Tommy Jordan Photography.  I have been the subject of many of his photo shoots in my time.  He photographed my band, me when I was working with him on The Haunted Cave, as well as a few experimental shots here and there.

One fine day we all went to this place called Burger’s Lake.  As we were leaving, I was holding his camera (Which by the way, was a Film SLR that I can’t remember the model of…). He then instructed me on how to hold it best, how focusing worked, how to lock the focus on the subject (In this case a girl swinging on the Trapeze line over the water). I shot my first photo that day with a REAL camera!  From that moment on, I was always inquisitive about Photography.  I would later buy several cameras.  Ranging from a Kodak Disc, several cheap 35mm based point and shoot cameras and even a Polaroid (Remember those??).

As time went on, I bought me a digital camera, it was an Olympus 3 MP, nothing fancy, but it was where I got my official start.  Since I was in a band and had been in several by this point in time, I got into web development early on and was making basic static websites for people, mostly local bands.  One of the things I offered though, was that I would come out and photograph them at rehearsal and at a show of their choosing.  This way we used recent photos and would create their site 100% from scratch.  This would include Individual Portraits, Group Shots, Live Concert Shots.  This was a great time to be in this part of the creative side of websites.  It also spurred on my interest in Photography.

Speeding forward in time a bit, I finally decided I wanted a DSLR.  I had been reading about them for quite some time at this point.  I started talking with my friend Tommy, as he was using at this time a Fuji.  After some discussions with him, browsing websites he suggested as well as B&H and others I could find, I had the information I needed.  It gave me the needed information to understand some of the technical terms and options available to me as a consumer.  After having a decent tax return, I asked Tommy to go with me to the camera store and a few days later we went.

The one bit of advice he gave me about my purchase was something I had never thought of, but it sticks with me to this very day.  It was very simple advice, buy the camera that you are comfortable with holding, because you’re going to be holding it for very long periods of time and it’s best to find one that you enjoy. Let’s face it, in today’s photography it doesn’t matter if you shoot Nikon, Canon, Sony, Olympus, they all can take amazing images in the right hands.

At this point in my career I’ve had the pleasure of being a Portrait photographer, helping my friend Tommy out at times when he needed a stand-in and or help on a shoot.  Also I’ve done a great deal of Product Photography, Special Events, Landscape and On-Location shoots.  Every image on this site, I personally took with my Nikon D80, which is only 10MP.  Along with that I have a very decent lens collection I’m building up, as Glass (Photographer Terms are starting!) is one of the single most important parts of your craft, second to only you!

Now I love shooting just about anything, I’ve even tried my hand at sports.  I need to get some faster lenses for that I must admit, but I still love trying.  I look at everything I do as a photographer, as a new chance to learn something new, whether it be a new focusing technique, lighting approach or even an entirely new subject all together.  Photography and Design for me go hand in hand as they’re both visual and very much, Art!  Take a tour through my site.  There will be a lot of changes in the days to come and I’m looking forward to my new horizon here in San Antonio, Texas!
